About the “Three-Quarter Sequence” Requirement of the Statistics BS
Statistics is valuable only when it’s applied to real-world problems. Gaining expertise in another field is necessary for Statisticians. Thus, candidates for the Statistics BS (but not Statistics BA) are required to take “approved, coherent, three-quarter sequence at the 20000 level in a field to which statistics can be applied.”
Please note the 3 courses are NOT statistics, data analysis, or research method courses offered by other departments. They should be substantive courses in the other discipline that are
- beyond introductory level (the course number must be 2XXXX or higher, not 1XXXX)
- not courses that can fulfill the General Education (Core) requirement
- if in Biology, they should be beyond the “Fundamentals” sequence
- should be of a level that is suitable for students majoring in the other field (e.g., to count toward the major in the other field)
- not in math, stat, computation, or CS
- not Econometrics (since it’s mostly Statistics)
The three courses must form a sequence or be thematically related, ensuring that the knowledge gained in subsequent courses builds on what was learned previously.
