  1. The concentration (in nanograms / ml) of plasma epinephrine were measured for ten dogs uner isoflurane, halothane, and cyclopropane anesthesia; the measurements are given in the following table (Perry, et al 1974). Is there a difference in treatment effects?
      1 1 0.28 1 4 0.39 1 7 0.32 1 10 0.33
      2 1 0.30 2 4 0.68 2 7 0.88 2 10 0.32
      3 1 1.07 3 4 0.28 3 7 0.49 3 10 0.30
      1 2 0.51 1 5 0.29 1 8 0.69
      2 2 0.39 2 5 0.38 2 8 0.39
      3 2 1.35 3 5 1.24 3 8 0.56
      1 3 1.00 1 6 0.36 1 9 0.17
      2 3 0.63 2 6 0.21 2 9 0.51
      3 3 0.69 3 6 1.53 3 9 1.02

These data are available on the WWW in the directory OtherData, under the file name dogs.dat The three columns of the data set represent, in order, Anesthetic (1=isoflurane, 2=halothane, 3=cyclopropane), Dog id, and epinephrine level. [Source: Rice, 1995: 479].
  2. The following data from the calibration of a proving ring, a device for measuring force (Hockersmith and Ku, 1969). Examine the plot of deflection vs load, fit deflection as a linear function of load, and assess the adequacy of the linear model. Can you construct a better model?
    10000 1 68.32 40000 1 273.85 70000 1 480.65 100000 1 688.70

These data are available on the WWW in the directory OtherData, under the file name provring.dat The three columns of the data set represent, in order, Load, Run number, and Deflection. [Source: Rice, 1995: 560].
  3. Coswell (1973) studied a method of measuring resistance to breathing in children. The table below lists total respiratory resistance and height for a group of children with cystic fibrosis. Is there a relationship between height and resistance for these children?
       89 13.8 97 17.0 103 11.6 108 8.8
       93 8.2 97 11.0 105 9.5 106 9.5
       92 9.0 111 8.2 109 15.0 109 9.2
