Textbook

Required: [FPP] David Freedman, Robert Pisani and Roger Purves, Statistics, W. W. Norton. Third edition. (On reserve in Eckhart Library). Check here for chapters that will not be covered in this course.

Calculators

For the homeworks, quizzes and exams, students will need a simple calculator that can calculate squares and square roots.

Grade components

The course grade has four components: Homework, Short Quizzes, Midterm, and Final. All quizzes and exams are closed book.
  1. Homework (20%) will be assigned weekly, collected, graded, and returned. All homework will be due at the beginning of class on the assigned due date (normally a Friday). Late homework will not be accepted for any reason. To allow for emergencies or bad luck, the lowest homework score will be dropped from the grade computation.
  2. Short Quizzes (20%) will be given throughout the quarter (normally every other Friday). The quizzes will typically last 15 to 20 minutes. As with the homework, there will be no excused absences from the quizzes, but the lowest score will be omitted from the grade computation.
  3. The midterm exam (25%) will be a 75 minute examination. It will be held on
    1.
Midterm exam: Tuesday, Oct. 24, 6:30-7:45 PM in Eck 133

No makeup examination will be given. The exam is closed-book, but you will be allowed to bring one 8 x 11 inch sheet with formulas and other relevant material on both sides.

  4. The final exam (35%) will be two hours in length and will cover the entire course. Schedule for the final exam is as follows
    1.
Final Exam: Tuesday, December 5, 6:30-8:30 PM in Eck 133

No makeup examination will be given. The exam is closed-book, but you will be allowed to bring one 8 x 11 inch sheet with formulas and other relevant material on both sides.

For the students graduating this quarter, another time and place must be arranged for the convocation final exam. Let the instructors know ASAP if you are graduating.

Grading policies

The Department of Statistics has some special rules about grades in Statistics 200. Note in particular that the Department's policy on `I' is very restrictive.

Prerequisites

Statistics 200 has empirical science and mathematics prerequisites. Make sure that you have satisfied the prerequisties. Students who have taken Statistics 220 or equivalent courses should not take Statistics 200.
