Linda Brant Collins is Senior Lecturer and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of Statistics. She teaches undergraduate statistics courses and advises undergraduate students minoring in Statistics (and anyone pondering a Statistics major). Dr. Collins supervises curriculum and technology for introductory statistics courses. She also leads a workshop on teaching for Statistics graduate students: future instructors of these courses. She helps new statistics teachers keep data in the forefront of their courses and incorporate active-learning practices in their classrooms—even in the more "theoretical" (post-calculus) courses like STAT 23400 at the University of Chicago.
Dr. Collins is a member of the American Statistical Association's Section on Statistical Education and attends conferences and workshops that focus on active learning, assessment methods, technology in the classroom, and curriculum design.
To keep courses relevant to modern computational practice in statistics, Dr. Collins incorporates permutation tests, resampling, and the bootstrap into her introductory courses. Undergraduates report on their evaluations that computer simulation enhanced their understanding of statistical theory and practice.
Dr. Collins lives in Indiana, a couple of miles from the Indiana Dunes State Park. She comes in to Chicago on the South Shore electric commuter train. When the weather is nice, you might see her riding her kick scooter to campus from the 57th Street train station.
