Statistics PhD Vivak Patel has been awarded the prestigious Harper Dissertation Fellowship for 2017-18. The University-wide competition awards financial support toward the completion of the candidate's dissertation.

05.18.17 Award-winning Students!
The David Wallace Award for Applied Statistics is given annually to two graduate students working on applications of statistics in scientific domains. This year's award was given to Christopher McKennan for his work on analysis of asthma genetics and genomics datasets and to Wanting Xu for her work on statistical analysis of high-frequency voltage measurements from an electrical circuit exhibiting chaotic behavior. This award was established thanks to a generous donation by Statistics alumnus, David Frohardt-Lane (MS, 2000).

Prof. Michael Stein has been awarded the Arthur L. Kelly Prize for exceptional service in the Physical Sciences Division. The Kelly Prize will be awarded at the PSD Convocation ceremony on June 10.

04.27.17 Jian Ding Awarded the Rollo Davidson Prize
Prof. Jian Ding has been awarded the Rollo Davidson Prize for 2017 for his achievements on mixing and cover times and on the random k-SAT conjecture. This year's prize was jointly awarded to Prof. Nike Sun of Berkeley for her achievements in probability theory and random k-SAT conjecture.

Lek-Heng Lim was awarded the 2017 James H. Wilkinson Prize for research in numerical analysis and scientific computing. He will present the James H. Wilkinson Numerical Analysis and Scientific Computing Prize Lecture on July 12, at the 2017 SIAM Annual Meeting.

Prof. Xiao-Li Meng of Harvard University will give the 18th Annual Bahadur Lectures on Wednesday, April 19, at 3:30 PM (reception following) and on Thursday, April 20, at 3:30 PM. Both lectures and the reception will be at the Stevanovich Center, MS 112, at 5727 S. University Ave.

03.27.17 Lek-Heng Lim: FoCM Stephen Smale Prize
Lek-Heng Lim will receive the third Stephen Smale Prize for his outstanding contributions to the foundations of computational mathematics, and will present the FoCM Smale Prize Plenary talk at the FoCM 2017 conference in Barcelona being held July 10-19, 2017.

03.27.17 Rina Foygel Barber: IMS Tweedie New Researcher
Rina Foygel Barber has been awarded the IMS Tweedie New Researcher Award for groundbreaking contributions in high-dimensional statistics and will present the Tweedie New Researcher Invited Lecture at the IMS New Researchers Conference at Johns Hopkins University on July 27-29, 2017.

12.12.16 Ph.D. Degree in Computational and Applied Mathematics
The University of Chicago has recently approved a new degree-granting Ph.D. program in Computational and Applied Mathematics. The program will be jointly administered by faculty in a number of departments (Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science and others) in a formal framework called the Committee on Computational and Applied Mathematics (CCAM). Prof. Lek-Heng Lim is one of 24 recipients to receive a DARPA Young Faculty Award of $500,000 for 2015-2017. The objective of the program "is to identify and engage rising research stars in junior faculty positions at U.S. academic institutions and introduce them to Department of Defense needs as well as DARPA’s program development process."

Andy Poppick's work on evolving climate variability has won an ASA student paper award. Andy is co-advised by Profs. Michael Stein (Statistics) and Liz Moyer (Geophysical Sciences) and will present his paper at the 2016 Joint Statistical Meeting in Chicago; a preprint is available here. Andy's research is supported by U. Chicago's Center for Robust Decision-making on Climate and Energy Policy (RDCEP) and by STATMOS, the Research Network for Statistical Methods for Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences.

Prof. Jonathan Weare has been awarded the 2015 IMA Prize in Mathematics and Its Applications, which will be presented on November 2 at the 2015 Abel Conference at the IMA. Weare was also selected for a 2015 Department of Energy Early Research Award in the Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) program.

Paul has been an instrumental and beloved part of our department for over 50 years and will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held at Columbia University on November 20, 2011. 02.22.11 Professor Lars Peter Hansen has been selected for the 2010 BBVA Foundation's Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Economics, Finance, and Management. The Foundation’s statement calls particular attention his work in the 1980s on the Generalized Method of Moments, which it termed “a powerful statistical framework that empirically addresses how economic agents cope with changing and risky environments.” Other BBVA laureates this year included biologist Edward O. Wilson and computer scientist Donald E. Knuth; the awards are funded by the Spanish banking group BBVA and awarded in collaboration with the Spanish National Research Council.

We are pleased to have Steffen L. Lauritzen, Professor and Chair, Department of Statistics, University of Oxford, as our honored speaker.

05.01.09 Prof. Wei-Biao Wu and coauthor Xiaofeng Shao were awarded the "Tjalling C. Koopmans Econometric Theory Prize 2008" for their article "A Limit Theorem for Quadratic Forms and Its Applications" in Econometric Theory, Vol. 23, No. 5, October 2007, pages 930-951. The prize is awarded every three years for the best paper in the journal Economic Theory over the past three years. The Koopmans prize was established as a memorial to Tjalling C. Koopmans, 1975 Nobel Laureate in Economic Science, and his many lasting contributions to econometrics. It is jointly supported by Cambridge University.

Sloan Research Fellows are selected for being outstanding early-career researchers who show exceptional promise. The Sloan Foundation has been supporting such research and academic talent for over 50 years; Drton is one of 118 faculty members at 61 colleges selected as this year 's fellows.
